What is a Mandala?
In the ancient Sanskrit language of Hinduism and Buddhism, mandala means “circle.” Traditionally, a mandala is a geometric design or pattern that represents the cosmos or deities in various heavenly worlds. But put more simply - A mandala is a complex abstract design that is usually circular in form.
Mandalas generally have one identifiable center point, from which emanates an array of symbols, shapes and forms. Mandalas can contain both geometric and organic forms as they can also contain recognizable images that carry meaning for the person who is creating it.
In its essence, mandalas represent the connection between our inner worlds and outer reality and can be both inspirational and therapeutic.
All Mandala Artwork at Free Expression Studio comes from local Mandala Artist Noemi Sanchez based out of Prosser.
A little note from the artist:
“My name is Noemi Sanchez I was born in Tijuana, B.C. but I have lived in Prosser, WA for more than twenty years. I have four children - a 30yr old son, a 25yr old daughter, a 17yr old son and my youngest, 8 years old, which was my reason for starting my journey in art.
In January 2021 my youngest son
was diagnosed with brain cancer, and during this process I learned to paint a technique with dots that helped me cope
with my pain. He spent 10 months in the hospital which was very difficult for me and my family and I took refuge in art since that cured my pain.
Now I continue painting so that my family feels proud of me since that saved me from depression when I saw my son's
struggle. However it was not the first time that I experienced being in hospitals - my 17yr old son has had three heart
surgeries and so then with this on my youngest, it was very difficult for me.
I think that in the end I am a wonder woman for having the blessing of having two special children. Thank you for valuing my art that was born from pain.”
