Winter Solstice 8-Week Strengthening Series

Gain some positive momentum to take with you into the new year with the tradition of practicing 108
Sun Salutations with us this Winter!

Sun Salutations are typically found in Vinyasa-style yoga and traditionally practiced to usher in the new day (hence the name). “Vinyasa” in Sanskrit can be translated to mean, linking breath to motion in continuous flow; which makes the various movements of a Sun Salutation physically challenging as well as a great cardiovascular workout. 

 

Why practice now?

It is tradition that practicing 108 Sun Salutations is reserved for the change of the seasons (Winter/Summer Solstice, Spring/Fall Equinox) and is believed that the internal fire or heat that you build during this practice is cleansing, detoxifying, and gets you more in touch with yourself. 

1) Move Energy - the internal heat that is created helps activate Prana (upward energy) which helps create/move energy and stuck emotions.

2) Surrender - at some point during this practice the following thought is bound to cross your mind, “why did I sign up for this?” But if you let that thought pass and keep going, you will find a state of ease/sense of flow surrendering to the process - acknowledging what comes up emotionally and then allowing yourself to let it go - finding when you finish, you feel lighter and may even understand the meaning of this ancient ritual.

But you may be asking… 108?? Are you nuts!

Don’t worry, it is achievable but more importantly, YOU ARE CAPABLE.

So listen up, we will be breaking this down into a new 8 week series of 8 classes leading to the day of Winter Solstice at which point we take on 108 Sun Salutations!

This Solstice Strengthening Series is meant to help strengthen the muscles your body uses within a Sun Salutation while offering students a chance for a breakdown of the postures that make up this traditional sequence so you feel confident and prepared for this challenge.

Each week there will be a different focus paired with core specific exercises allowing students a chance to better understand how to approach these well-known yoga poses in a way that works best for your body and your practice.

An overview of this series looks something like this…
Week 1 Focus: Tadasana Mountain Pose
Week 2 Focus: Uttanasana Forward Fold
Week 3 Focus: Ardha Uttanasana Half Way Lift
Week 4 Focus: Dandasana Plank Pose
Week 5 Focus: Back Strengthening
Week 6 Focus: Adho Mukha Svanasana Downward Facing Dog
Week 7 Focus: Sun Salutation Overview + Modifications
Week 8 Tuesday 12/21: The Big Day for 108 Sun Salutations

This series is beginner friendly and all levels are welcome to join!

Better yet, you’ll walk away with…
- A foundation of core strength and various exercises to build on that foundation moving forward

- Up to 5 Chaturanga Dandasana (Half Push-Up) variations including accessible modifications for beginners

- Detailed knowledge of the asanas (yoga poses) that make up a full Sun Salutation sequence to use for home practice time and time again

TUESDAYS 8:30AM – 9:30AM
OR
FRIDAYS 6:30PM – 7:30PM
Starting Tuesday 11/2
*Note that our usual Tuesday morning Intro to Vinyasa class is being replaced for this short 8-week period to accommodate for this series; we apologize for any inconvenience in taking away the previous class for the time being, but hope you’ll join us for the entirety of the 8-week’s strengthening together!

2) Virtual Live Streaming
3) On-Demand*
*On-Demand Challenge is set up so it can be done on your own time via home practice allowing flexibility with your schedule is the designated live class times are non attend-able. Due to this option relying on self-accountability and not getting the same interactive opportunity as what in-studio participation and live streaming offers, cost per class is less.

The focus is not on achieving all 108 in the end, it’s learning how to tap into compassion for yourself along the way - just do your best! We will offer plenty of modifications for how to succeed and will do all the counting for you ;)
